Riding With An Aftermarket Exhaust

Loud Pipes And Your Bike

So I've got a Competition Werkes slip-on fitted to my '09 Yamaha R6 and it sounds great. However, I normally ride with earplugs so it seems mellow.

But today I thought I might commute without earplugs just to see what it's like for other drivers and the surrounding community.

To tell you the truth, it's a little louder than I thought. Not too loud, but to keep us bikers out of the spotlight I decided that in certain areas I'll carry it a gear or two high. Different areas with walls or more houses magnified the sound so I decided I'll keep it down in those areas but rev it up when I need to stop a driver from hitting me.

Truth be told, if your commute doesn't have too much freeway and you ride with earplugs, try it without. That way you'll know where you should keep it down and where you can open it up. This way, we can all run pipes without being hassled. But if we all run around with loud exhaust pinned in 1st gear we''ll it ruin for everybody.

Just my two cents, I'll get off my soapbox now.
