Afraid of the Cops?

Police and the Law

This morning I encountered a classic case of "cop stop" from two riders ahead of me...

I was third in line as we split traffic up the 405 freeway during rush hour. We were going about 50 mph, while traffic was going probably 35-40. After maybe two miles of this the rider in front abruptly slotted his bike in the lane. At this point I saw why; a state trooper was in front of him. The second rider did the same.

I didn't even consider chopping the throttle as I passed both bikes and the police cruiser. After all, what we were doing was perfectly legal. And even if it was illegal, did they think they would be OK if they suddenly jumped in behind the cop car? Weird...

I'm willing to stake my bike's pink slip that these two other riders aren't positive about the lane splitting law, which is why they acted as they did.

Once I passed they waited maybe 10 seconds then did the same after seeing that it was apparently "safe."

Know your laws people, and don't freak out just because you see a cop!
