On the way into work the other morning another rider most certainly saved me from a heavy speeding ticket...
…There’s a nice four-lane highway with a perfect 1-mile stretch of open road without any cross streets. It’s the one portion of my ride that calls for some WOT pulls when its free of traffic.
Just before turning onto this open road I popped a double downshift in anticipation and just before “hitting it,” an oncoming rider tapped his helmet–the universal signal for “Police ahead, watch out!”
I promptly up-shifted and held back, sure enough, sitting just around the bend was Mr. Motorcycle Officer with his handy radar gun pointed right at me. I received a stern stare as I cruised by and I reciprocated with a smile and a wave.
I don’t know about other states, but drivers don’t do this for one another! However, here in Ca., motorcyclists represent a makeshift brotherhood where we look out for one another. Albeit not everybody partakes in this mentality, but it’s nice to see many still do. In my eyes, it’s yet another reason why riding is better than driving.
So the next time you pass by another rider give them a wave and if you just passed an officer, warn the oncoming riders. If anything, it’s just good karma.
